EDR Antwerp Shipyard

"The MicroStep really stood out"

About EDR Antwerp Shipyard

Engine Deck Repair (EDR) Antwerp Shipyard has been around since the late 20th century. In just 25 years, the company has grown to become the largest player in ship repairs in Belgium. As its name suggests, it’s located in the heart of the Port of Antwerp, where it takes on the most challenging repair work.

“In addition to ship repairs and maintenance, the shipyard is also responsible for technical supplies and the distribution of spare parts. EDR also provides specific solutions for inland shipping. The independent shipyard, with its 4 dry docks, 2,000 m² of repair quay, 14,000 m² technical workshop, and 16,000 m² storage facility, adds value to the global port of Antwerp,” explains commercial officer Philippe Trouillard.

Since 2015, EDR has been investing in their shipyard in partnership with the port. One of these investments was a new plasma cutting machine, as their largest division is their steelworks department. This workshop is fully equipped to handle all maritime and offshore activities.

Their main focus? Speed and quality.

In 2013, they purchased a MicroStep plasma cutting machine with a cutting range of 6 x 2.5 m. Now it was time to significantly expand that capacity.

They opted again for a MicroStep CombiCut plasma cutting machine, this time with a cutting range of 27 x 3 m. The machine is equipped with:

  • two gantries, each with a plasma rotator;
  • two Kjellberg SmartFocus 300 plasma sources;
  • a Donaldson DFE3-18 extraction unit.

“With the MicroStep CombiCut 27001.30 Prk + 1.30 Prk, we chose a larger range with two gantries,” says Tom De Schepper, procurement manager at EDR. “Each of the two gantries is equipped with a Kjellberg plasma source. We specifically chose Kjellberg because the brand offers an easy-to-operate and high-quality gas console that is suited to companies – like ours – that primarily cut steel but occasionally have other metals on the cutting table as well.”

Naturally, there was a reason why EDR chose MicroStep again.

“We opted for MicroStep again because these machines have the perfect price-to-quality ratio. We also compared with machines from other suppliers, but MicroStep really stood out. Furthermore, a strong relationship of trust has grown with supplier Wouters Cutting & Welding. We know we can rely on their service, which is worth a lot.”

After a delivery time of 18 weeks and installation and training of about one month, the machine was ready for use.

“It is, of course, pleasant for our employees to work with and learn about new machines. It also demonstrates the company’s willingness to invest,” notes Tom De Schepper.

With this MicroStep, EDR can certainly uphold its reputation as the largest player in Belgium with distinction.
